What to do?

Emergencies are scary and can be very stressful.  We recommend having an emergency kit for any species you own so that you are prepared to help your dog or horse if something unexpected happens.  Here are some examples of supplies:

  • Bandage materials – cotton wraps, gauze, vet wrap, towels
  • Bandage scissors
  • Thermometer
  • Peroxide
  • Pepto Bismol
  • Syringes
  • Rubber gloves
  • Banamine/Bute (horses)
  • Bayer aspirin or baby aspirin (dogs)

Have on hand your emergency plan.  If you encounter something you cannot handle at home, know who to call in the event of a day time emergency, evening or weekends.

We can take in day time emergencies for our regular patients, but we may not be at the clinic.  Call the clinic number first (616) 244-3496 and if we don’t answer or call you back in 20 minutes, please call the mobile (517) 667-2944.  If you have an evening (after 5pm) or weekend emergency with your dog or cat, we refer to emergency clinics listed below.

If you have an emergency in the evening or on the weekend with horses, goats or sheep, please call the Prairie Creek mobile (517) 667-2944.  If you get the voicemail, please leave a message and you will be called back in 15-20 minutes.  We do emergency farm calls for these times and can usually get to you within 30-45 minutes depending on where you live.
